The California Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society was founded in 1952 by local Rhododendron enthusiasts. The chapter currently has over 100 members in the San Francisco Bay Area, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hawaii. Members of the California Chapter enjoy monthly meetings which are held every third Thursday of the month from September to May. The meetings start at 7:30 pm and continue until 9:30 pm.
Meetings generally include a guest speaker who is
knowledgeable about rhododendrons or good companion plants. Topics in the past have in included "Exploring for Rhododendrons in the wilds of
China, India and Tibet", "New Hybrids on the Oregon/Washington Coast",
"Satsuki Azaleas", "Rhododendrons in the wild", "Sudden Oak Death" and
"Vireyas." Each meeting usually ends with a silent auction of plants
provided either by our guest speaker or by the club. Members and
friends also enjoy field trips to local gardens and nurseries.
The annual show and plant sale features hundreds of blossoms and trusses representing all the major Rhododendron groups, including vireyas, maddenias and azaleas.
